Val's Creative Writing

Val feels very fortunate to have had what she calls her writing rooms for much of her working life. Though running The Live Literature Company takes an enormous amount of her time, when there is a space, Val seizes the opportunity to focus on her creative writing. Val is currently working on arranging the staging and funding of her unperformed full length performance piece Ivor Gurney: Poet, Composer, First World War Private Soldier - remembered.

In Autumn 2016, Val's prose poem Song of Innocence, a dialogue set in the womb between twins, was performed in The Live Literature Company's On The Move evening at Amnesty International's Human Rights Action Centre. This marked a continued link between Amnesty and Val's creative writing; in 2014 her prose poem First Love, a tragedy about cultural misunderstanding was performed as part of the New Spring Without FGM evening that the company staged at Amnesty.

Val's short play The Quilt has been performed on numerous occasions, including at The National Portrait Gallery, at Guy's hospital, and for the medical humanities conference at Kings College London university. Song of Innocence, First Love, and The Quilt were all performed as rehearsed readings at The Actors' Centre in London prior to these more recent performances. Also performed on this evening was Val's play The Chestnut Seller.

Val has also written a full-length play, The Silence, which was given a workshop performance by Yorkshire New Writers Group.
